Rachel Hagues

Rachel Hagues, doctoral candidate in HDFS, was selected to receive the University of Georgia Graduate School's 2012 Dissertation Completion Award. This award is given to competitive applicants who must be first nominated by their department's faculty and are then are selected by a University-level faculty panel. This award will allow Rachel to be fully devoted to writing and completing her dissertation during Fall 2012 and Spring 2013. Rachel is currently conducting her dissertation research in Tanzania on gender discrimination of girls in/around schools in a remote village, and the risk and protective factors that exist to impact girls' likelihood of experiencing discrimination and abuse.

Rachel was also the 2011 recipient of the Feldman Outstanding Research Proposal Award from the Family Policy Section of the National Council on Family Relations. This award goes to a graduate student or new professional who "has demonstrated excellence in research and potential contribution to family policy studies, particularly in the areas of gender/women's issues or poverty"

Rachel has enjoyed her graduate education in UGA's Department of Human Development and Family Science. One of her favorite experiences in graduate school has been teaching the Family Policy course. She says, "the opportunity to teach a class on my own has proven to be a wonderful way to grow as a professional. And, I had no idea I would love it so much!" Rachel also is thankful for how approachable the faculty members have been. "Particularly with doing international research, there are so many unknowns. I have been so grateful for the many faculty members who have made themselves available to me to help me think about my research questions and guide me on methodology."

After finishing her Ph.D., Rachel plans to seek a job in the outreach arm of a university or an international non-profit. Her ultimate goal is to assist communities in developing countries to create policies and structures that protect children and allow them to achieve their full potential.
